What Is a Focal Plane in a Rifle Scope?
A focal plane is the position inside a rifle scope where the reticle sits relative to the magnification lenses. Its location determines one thing: whether your reticle grows and shrinks with the target as you change magnification, or remains a fixed size. That single choice shapes how the optic performs at distance.
Inside a variable-power scope, the reticle is placed either at the objective focal plane or the eyepiece focal plane, which the industry labels the first and second focal planes. In a first focal plane build, the reticle is disposed between the objective lens and the erector assembly. A second focal plane build moves it behind the magnification system, closer to your eye.
